Following two contentious meetings, the Newton School Committee voted to oppose Question #2 on the statewide ballot. JALSA members were significantly represented in the debate on the controversial ballot issue which would allow up to twelve new charter schools each year. School Committee members Margie Ross Decter and Diana Gomberg led the effort for a Newton School Committee vote against the proposal. A number of Boston school parents came to the meeting to urge the committee to take a position on the ballot issue and to vote against lifting the cap on charter schools.
